Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you do at Squadron Energy?

I started my career in town planning, where I gained an understanding of the regulatory, spatial and commercial aspects of land use and development. I later transitioned into a project development role where I focused on identifying and securing land for renewable energy assets. That role deepened my interest in property and environment law, which led me to transition from Development into Legal & Risk here at Squadron.

In my current role as a Lawyer, I provide legal support across the business to facilitate the development, construction and operation of our renewable energy assets. This includes providing advice on contract negotiations, regulatory compliance and risk management that aligns with our legal requirements and company strategy. I really enjoy the variety of challenges that come with navigating the evolving renewable energy landscape.

From Development to Legal & Risk – quite the journey! Can you tell us a bit about what drew you to make this transition within Squadron Energy?

I have always felt a strong connection to Squadron and its goals. After spending time in Development, I realised that the legal side of the business was where I wanted to focus my career. As a Project Developer, I was frequently involved in the legal and contractual aspects of our development projects, and I found that I was increasingly drawn to those elements. I also wanted to gain experience working on the delivery and operational aspects of our assets. I saw the legal role as an exciting opportunity to build on my existing knowledge while also diving deeper into the legal complexities across the wider business. It is great that Squadron was able to provide the opportunity and support for the transition.

What do you find most rewarding about your work at Squadron?

As a Lawyer at Squadron, it is rewarding to work across teams with a variety of skills and experience. We are all collectively problem solving and charting new paths forward. Whether it is negotiating contracts, ensuring regulatory compliance, or finding creative ways to manage risks, every day presents opportunities to shape the future of clean energy in Australia. Being part of a company that embraces a forward-thinking mindset is incredibly motivating. We are not just reacting to changes in the industry, we are actively helping to shape them.

For those who might not know much about the role of the legal team in a renewable business, can you describe how the Legal & Risk team supports the success of Squadron’s goals?

An internal legal team is vital in the success of a renewable energy company. The Legal & Risk team helps Squadron grow responsibly and sustainably while minimising potential liabilities. The team provides a range of practical legal advice to enable the business to focus on its core mission of developing, delivering and operating energy assets. This includes advising on regulatory compliance, financing and investment, contract, environmental and safety risks, corporate governance, dispute resolution and mitigation management and mergers and acquisitions.

Do you have any advice for others looking to pivot or diversify their roles?

A career pivot will likely involve a period of learning, some doubt and adaptation. Be prepared to face challenges and learning curves. Embracing a mindset of continuous learning and growth can be helpful but also not being afraid to reach out for support when needed.
