Squadron Energy’s Chairman Jason Willoughby was pleased to give evidence to the Select Committee on Nuclear Energy’s inquiry into nuclear power generation in Sydney today.

Mr Willoughby emphasised the urgent need to stay focussed on delivering the lowest cost energy generation solutions that are available today in order to replace Australia’s ageing coal plants.

“Australia relies on coal generation for about two thirds of its power, and the vast majority of those coal fired power stations are nearing the end of their technical and economic life,” Mr Willoughby said.

“We need to replace those coal plants as quickly as we can with the lowest cost generation solution that's available. We have done the analysis and day in day out, the answer is the same - the lowest cost source of electricity generation is wind, solar and batteries firmed by gas.

“At the same time, we need to continue to put communities and local regions at the centre of everything we do, because we don’t have an energy transition if we don’t look after our communities.”

Squadron Energy aims to improve the environment for current and future generations by leading Australia’s transition to renewable energy.

Key to that aim is ensuring the communities where we operate see a lasting, economic benefit from this energy shift.

To date, Squadron Energy has generated enough electricity to prevent more than 7 million tonnes of emissions, while creating 2,100 direct jobs and injecting $350 million into regional economies.

Our development pipeline spans wind and solar generation, battery storage and firming, including Australia's only LNG import terminal, located in Port Kembla NSW – which we completed construction of this week.
