“If the Federal Opposition wants to deliver affordable domestic gas at $10 per gigajoule to Australians, there’s a simpler, faster, and taxpayer-free way to get it to the southern states.
“The existing North-South pipeline from Queensland is already at full capacity during peak demand periods – a fact clearly demonstrated by last winter’s gas supply crisis, when prices spiked to $28/GJ. Simply relying on existing pipelines won’t deliver the additional 100 petajoules promised.
“Rather than taxpayers funding $1 billion of new gas pipeline infrastructure, which wouldn't be ready in the first term of a coalition government, the LNG regassification terminal at Port Kembla is already built and fully-funded.
“The regassification terminal acts as a virtual pipeline, capable of bringing 130 petajoules (PJ) of competitively-priced gas directly into New South Wales and Victoria every year - whether that gas come from domestic or international sources - more than enough to end the gas crisis - and it's already built.
“Australians shouldn’t have to wait years or pay extra for pipelines they don’t need. We have a clear, immediate pathway to deliver affordable energy to households and businesses across NSW and Victoria.
“The clear, guaranteed, fiscally responsible choice is to leverage our ready-made infrastructure, save taxpayers $1 billion, and rapidly deliver affordable energy to households and businesses across NSW and Victoria.”
