Bungaban Wind energy project has been selected under the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), supporting its continued progress through development.
The selection was jointly announced over the weekend by the Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, and Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Josh Wilson, as part of the Australian Government’s latest Capacity Investment Scheme tender.
Kimberly Cram, Project Director, Bungaban Joint Venture, said the selection recognises Bungaban as a well-progressed project with a clear pathway through development.
“Bungaban Wind has been designed from the outset to work with the region, informed by detailed engagement and planning,” Ms Cram said.
“It shows how projects of this scale can coexist with existing land uses while delivering lasting value for local communities.”
Bungaban is located on Iman and Auburn Hawkwood Country between Wandoan and Taroom in Queensland. The project has state development approval in place, with federal approvals progressing. Once operational, Bungaban has the potential to power the equivalent of around 860,000 Queensland homes and is expected to displace approximately 4 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
The project is being developed under a joint venture between Windlab and Squadron Energy.
Bungaban is expected to contribute around $500 million to the regional economy through local employment, supply and contracting opportunities, with around 1,000 jobs at peak construction.
Bungaban includes a structured community benefit sharing approach, with a pilot Community Fund already supporting local initiatives and a broader framework to be developed with stakeholders.
Powerlink is progressing approvals and contracting for the new connection infrastructure required to support the project.
Further detail is available in the Minister’s announcement.
