Substation energised in major construction milestone for Uungula Wind Farm

NSW is a step closer to its clean energy targets with the completion of construction and energisation of the Uungula Wind Farm substation this week.

Incorporating three transformers, the new 330/33kV substation connects the wind farm to the electricity network via 28 new towers and 11.6km of 330kV transmission line.

Squadron Energy Project Director Sanjay Goel said the substation would be the beating heart of the wind farm – responsible for pumping 414MW of renewable power into the NSW electricity grid.

“Energisation means the substation has been successfully switched on for the first time and clears the way for around 96km of underground and overhead cabling to be progressively connected the project’s 69 turbines and grid,” Mr Goel said.

“This significant milestone – achieved in partnership with our energy infrastructure supplier, Lumea – allows us to begin turbine testing and commissioning as we move closer to generating renewable energy for more than 220,000 homes.”

Construction of Uungula Wind Farm, near Wellington in Central West New South Wales, is two-thirds complete, with the substation, five turbines and 80% of ground works finished.

The project is supporting 262 jobs and is expected to contribute $41 million to the regional economy.
