Squadron Energy proudly partnered with the St George Illawarra Dragons to bring the 2024 Community Blitz program to four local schools in the South West Slopes region.

The program involves a series of interactive workshops run for local students centred around the St George Illawarra Dragons’ health and wellbeing program: ‘The Best You Can Be,’ and included school visits and clinics run by NRLW Dragons players in Boorowa, Murringo and Gunning.

Now in its eighth year, the program focuses on helping students make positive choices around health and wellbeing. The workshops include tips to stay active, how to practice tolerance, respect and inclusiveness, the importance of good sleep, screen time management, hydration and nutrition, as well as the important role we all play taking care of our environment.

NRLW player and Harden local Tara McGrath-West ran the sessions across the South West and provided her own personal insights into what helps her stay healthy.

“These school visits that we’re able to do through our Squadron Energy partnership are so important to us,” McGrath-West said.

“They’ve provided me an opportunity to go back to the area that I grew up and visit the towns I played a lot of my footy in when I was young. Knowing that I can make a difference and help educate students around my hometown on how they can look after themselves and act as a beacon for those wanting to pursue a career in rugby league is so rewarding.

“I’m a big believer in ‘seeing is believing’ and I’m grateful to be able to provide that for students who may think it isn’t possible coming from a small country town. It’s about helping them understand the importance of getting enough sleep each night, drinking enough water each day, and looking after your mental wellbeing by journaling and utilising our box breathing technique among other things.”

Bango Wind Farm’s Operations Manager Grant Stepien said the clinics were a fantastic opportunity for students across the region.

“It’s fantastic to have this community program in the South West Slopes after it was rolled out in the Central West earlier this year,” Mr Stepien said.

“Sport is a great way for communities to connect and share their passion and it was fantastic to have the Dragons in the region this week inspiring the next generation to be the best they can be – both on and off the footy field.”

Squadron Energy operates Bango Wind Farm, 14km south of Boorowa and 30km north of Yass, which generates enough electricity to power the equivalent of 144,000 NSW homes.

In early 2024, Squadron Energy joined forces with the St George Illawarra Dragons and announced a long-term partnership with a focus on community.

The partnership kicked off this year with Squadron Energy joining the Red V as a partner in the ‘under number’ position.

In 2025, Squadron Energy will become the Major Partner of the Dragons’ NRL and NRLW teams.
