Squadron Energy steps off jersey to let Indigenous artwork shine

Squadron Energy has proudly made the major decision to remove its logo from the St George Illawarra Dragons’ Indigenous jersey this year.

The Dragons’ Indigenous jersey and shorts, which were unveiled today, feature artwork by Gamilaraay and Wiradjuri artist, Kooriani Dunn.

Squadron Energy chose to ‘step off the jersey’ to make space for the artwork as a statement of cultural significance and respect for the Dragons’ First Nations players, communities and the artwork.

It’s a decision that has never been made by any major sponsor in the history of the NRL.

The theme of this year’s jersey is Drawing Courage from Country and Community, which Squadron Energy has embodied by creating space for the artwork.

Squadron Energy CEO Rob Wheals said it was a choice the company was proud to make.

“The Indigenous round is all about culture, connection and story,” Mr Wheals said.

“And in making our decision to not have our logo front and centre, we took a view that during this Indigenous round, the artwork and what it represents should take the lead without any competing brands.

“And we’re very proud of that decision because it’s created space to give an emphasis to the discussion around culture and connection and community and the storytelling.”

The artwork showcases natural culturally significant landmarks across Dharawal Country, including the Five Islands, Mount Keira, Mount Kembla, the Ocean, Rivers, and Streams.

These elements are woven through the Dragons’ distinct red and white colours, celebrating the region’s cultural heritage, and align with Squadron Energy’s work in respecting and protecting the environment for future generations.

The reveal of the Dragons’ Indigenous jersey coincides with NAIDOC Week.
