Squadron Energy welcomes the NSW Gas Statement and its clear focus on ensuring gas is available where and when it is needed as the energy system transitions.
The Statement recognises that NSW faces growing peak-day and annual gas supply risks, and that infrastructure constraints can limit the amount of gas able to reach southern markets during periods of high demand.
We particularly welcome the Government’s recognition of the Port Kembla Energy Terminal (PKET) as part of the state’s future supply mix, with PKET able to provide flexible access to both domestically produced and international gas at a capacity of up to 500 terajoules per day or 130 petajoules per year – equivalent to NSW’s forecast peak-day and annual gas demand.
PKET also provides an additional supply route into NSW and storage capability that can help manage winter peak demand and support gas-fired generation when the electricity system is under pressure.
The challenge now is to ensure policy settings, including the proposed Domestic Gas Reservation Scheme, recognise and enable all practical supply pathways so gas can physically reach customers when it is needed most.
We look forward to continuing to work with the NSW Government on practical, market-led solutions that strengthen energy security, support industry and complement the transition to a more renewable energy system.
